Peru’s sharks in figures

EcoOceanica, an NGO, has presented an interesting animation video that provides data on shark diversity in Peru and shark fisheries, and proposes actions for their sustainable conservation in the long term.

The following information is attached to the Youtube.com video:

“Undoubtedly, sharks all over the world are going through a critical moment. Unsustainable human activities such as overfishing and incidental catch have led many species to unsustainable levels. The main reason for overfishing sharks is the price of shark fins in the Asian market. Peru has not realized it has an important shark (and ray) fisheries and that it is a significant shark fin exporter. Shark fisheries in Peru are regulated but there are important deficiencies that require immediate attention.”
