MINAM announces the winner of the ArtClima award, towards the COP21

As part of the actions and activities developed in the route from Peru towards the COP21 and the construction of the climate change national agenda, the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) organized the ArtCLima award, targeting national artists interested in climate change issues.

The purpose of the award was presenting an artistic project within the framework of the COP21 in Paris, aiming at generating a space for debate, awareness, communication and exchange of experiences from the art scope.

On Friday, October 16 the jury formed by Manuel Pulgar Vida, Minister of the Environment; Alicia Kuroiwa, biologist and coordinator of the Wildlife Conservation Society; David Flores Hora, independent curator; Ishmael Randall Weeks, plastic artist and Nicolás Tarnawiecki, curator of the Luis Miro Quesada Garland Hall, chose the project presented by Elisenda Estrems as the winner of the ArtCLima award.

The project consists on one action to be developed in December in Paris, in the public space parallel top the COP21. It is a procession, where a large ice block will be carried in a traditional Peruvian “anda”, and it will melt as time passes by during the procession tour. It will be accompanied by a small band playing traditional music to worship the Apus (mountains) or music played in Andean festivities to bring a good year.

With this artistic piece, Elisenda Estrems aims at portraying the environmental problem of glacier melting in the Peruvian High-Andes, accompanying it with traditional elements of Andean religiosity and worship.

This project was chosen among proposals including photographs, sculptures, videos, art installations and sound art. The jury highlighted the relevance of the artist’s proposal, its artistic value and the potential capacity to call the man in the street and raise his awareness.
