Earth’s Day “gives us an excellent opportunity” to amend the damage humankind has caused in the past, stated Ban Ki-moon, in his message for our planet’s day.

The UN points out that on this date of homage to the Earth we are at a decisive moment for the environmental cause. Now “is the time to act and work sustainably and to be aware of the consequences our decisions have on the planet,” reminded Ban.

“This year the world intends to finish defining a sustainable development agenda after 2015 and to attain a new universal and constructive agreement on climate change,” he highlighted.

The Secretary General considered that these international agreements “can lead us towards a better future” by “eradicating extreme poverty in all its forms” and “redefining our relationship with the planet and each and every living being that inhabits it.”

This is why Ban sees 2015 as the opportunity to mark “a decisive milestone in the history of humankind.”

“This can be the year our children and grandchildren will remember as the moment in which we decided to build a sustainable and resilient , both for Mother Earth and for all those that development has left behind until now,” he insisted.
